![]() ![]() Surprisingly, the Mac mini has been around since 2005 – launched at the same time as the iPod shuffle.Yet as with everything Apple do, its design and functionality have changed quite a bit since then. For example, if you already have a screen, keyboard and mouse, you can pair these with the Mac mini instead of purchasing new ones (although you can opt for the Mac mini to arrive with them). ![]() It may seem odd at first, yet the Mac mini is mostly used to power up another device making it more of a flexible purchase. The Mac mini is shipped without an accompanying screen, keyboard or mouse as Apple likes to say, it’s “BYODKM” (Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse). The Mac mini is a small desktop computer made by Apple. If you want to know everything about the Mac mini– from what it is to how to set it up (and why it’s better than a regular PC)– then read on. A computer that can be used for digital signage. It’s a small, portable desktop computer that can turn any screen into a Mac-powered smart computer. Apple’s Mac mini is exactly that: a mini Mac. ![]() ![]() ![]() No problems with any other software, and Gimp worked perfectly until upgrading from El Capitan to High Sierra.Įeeek!!!! Audacity, too? ****! I've not used Audacity since switching to High Sierra, but I will be using it heavily again soon. This is driving me so crazy I'm about to go back to El Capitan! Does anyone know of a fix, a patch or a work-around to stop this behavior? I'm using Gimp on a mid-2010 MacBook 2.4gHz Core 2 Duo with 16 gb RAM and a 1TB hard drive. ![]() But they're not! This problem with script-fu calls persists in all versions from Gimp 2.8.14 to Gimp 2.8.22 as well as the development version of Gimp 2.9.6. I've tried all the latest versions of Gimp, including the ones that are said to be compatible with High Sierra. Everything worked well on El Capitan, but these problems always occur on Sierra and High Sierra. But then of course, Gimp must be quit and restarted to regain use fo script-fu for any other process. Only way to get back to using Gimp then is a force-quit of script-fu. In almost every case script-fu will perform the operations specified then freeze. Since upgrading from El Capitan to High Sierra I've experienced many problems with Gimp that all seem related to extensions that use Script-fu. You only have to go through the above ritual once per application obtained in this manner, and subsequent GIMP invocations are a normal double-click, or single click if in the Dock, or from Launchpad. This whole last paragraph is because the application was not downloaded from the Mac Application Store, and would be the normal security process for applications obtained outside of the store. When it is done, it will pop the application window on screen, and you can begin to use it. At this point GIMP will be performing some internal house-keeping, including building its own font cache from your system. The operating system will verify the application for known (by Apple) malware, and then you will receive a new dialog that "GIMP" is from an unidentified developer. In your Applications Folder, right-click/control-click/two-finger tap on the GIMP application icon, and choose Open from the secondary menu. Find the GIMP 2.8.22 icon on your Desktop, right-click, and eject it. Now, drag and drop the GIMP application icon into the Applications folder. Open a new Finder window, and click Applications in the Favorites side panel. A new Finder window will appear with just the GIMP application icon. The very bottom icon in the Downloads folder icon next to your Trash icon in the Dock will be the downloaded GIMP installer: gimp-2.8.22-x86_64.dmg.Ĭlick this installer once. Select this orange download button for Gimp, not the green Torrent button: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I usually use the page dimensions so I can find them easily. Double-click on “Untitled” to change the name to whatever you want. When you click the + button, a new page size “Untitled” will appear with the MS Word default measurements of 8.5 in width x 11 in height and margins of. See the little + and – signs under the list of page sizes? They allow you to add or delete custom page sizes. Īnother dialogue box will appear with the custom page sizes (if any) you’ve already created. Scroll down and click MANAGE CUSTOM SIZES. Click the PAPER SIZE drop-down box and a list of available custom page sizes will appear. It’s really easy to do and once you set it up, you won’t have to do it again.įrom the FILE menu, go to PAGE SETUP. Using pre-cut card stock often requires that you create a custom page size in MS Word since Word’s default size is 8.5″ x 11″ (in the US). ![]() If your printer loads the paper wonky or starts streaking, you only lose one invite instead of multiples on larger page. You don’t need to create printed borders that interfere with the design. You don’t have to guess where the cut lines are and hope your cuts are not too close or too far from the margin. ![]() Printing one invitation per page – instead of printing multiple invitations on a page and cutting each invitation from the printed pages – ultimately saves a ton of time, guesswork, and waste from the DIY invitation experience. Of all the tips I share about DIY invitations, one of my favorites is to cut your paper or card stock to the finished invitation size before you print. For specific operating system and MS Word version, please see Microsoft’s documentation. Instructions for PC-based Word (2007 and later are in ) next to the corresponding Mac-based ones below. Instructions for the PC are similar, but, of course, not the same. Click on that and you’ll see a menu of other possible programs that can handle movies and video files: As shown above, the default is “ Movies & TV“. For our purposes, however, you’ll want to check “ Video player“. ![]() Lots of defaults to tweak and change, including your favorite music player and email program (Thunderbird anyone?). Click or tap on “Default apps” on the right side and you’ll go directly to this window: You want to jump to the Default apps area of your Settings, so this is an easy shortcut. To accomplish that, search for “default apps” in the Windows 10 search tool on the Taskbar: Now you can always open up an individual video file in a program other than the default with a right click and “ Open with…” choice:ĭoable, but let’s change it for every file on your computer, not just this particular one. Without changing things, a double-click on an MP4 launches Windows Movies & TV app, which offers this sort of view without much at all in the way of controls: Even better, it plays a zillion different audio and video formats so if you get an MKV, MOV, OGG or some other weird video file, VLC can handle it. Better yet, the open source VLC media player is available for quite a few platforms, including Mac, Linux, Android and iOS, so you can standard on it everywhere! Grab yourself a copy from if you don’t already have this terrific program on your computer. There are quite a few video file players available for Windows – a quick check in the Microsoft Store confirms that! – but it’s really hard to be the zero cost, ad-free VLC program. It ended up too big, too complicated, too bloated and so… ciao, bella! You’re right, though, the replacement Movies & TV app is as bare bones as it gets, which might be good for some percentage of the Windows 10 audience, but for people who are a bit more technically savvy, it’s annoying. From a support perspective, simple is good, and I think that’s what happened with the demise of Windows Media Player. Microsoft is constantly trying to find the sweet spot between offering an overly simplified interface with too few controls and offering complex user experiences that offer tons of power and capabilities, but at the cost of user confusion and problems. ![]() |
